Blogging 101 | Thanksgiving Week Recap

thxgiving recap

Wow, have I been busy this week! Thankfully I took the day off from work to recover from a great meal, late night/early morning shopping, and to catch up on my Blogging 101 posts! I do have a lot to write about, as I’ve been ‘accumulating’ assignments and I have a bunch of new ideas for my blog!

Monday’s assignment: if you’re active on a social network, set up Publicize to link the account to your blog or add a widget highlighting your profile. If you’re not, explore your social options to see whether one might be helpful.

This is where I wish I could customize my theme to add the social media icons! My theme allows for a few, which I’ve added. I used WordPress’ Publicize tool to connect my Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn accounts. This way, I can choose which posts I want to share with the push of a button and not commit to sharing everything I post. I also created a Stumble Upon account last week, as well as got set up in Hootsuite. I’ve tried using HootSuite before, but I deactivated it because I didn’t really use Twitter a lot. But as the assignment details, Twitter and Facebook are good mediums for generalist blogs…

Tuesday’s assignment: add a new page to your blog, and make sure readers can find it easily.

I didn’t have a clue of what page I wanted to add, but after sitting on it for a few days, I decided that I wanted to add an awards page (I was recently nominated for the Liebster Award!!) a contact me page, and my bucket list! Check them out!

Wednesday’s assignment: pick a blogging event from the Community Event Listings to try for some instant community.

I really wanted to participate in Blogging U’s Photography 101 next (which I might), but I also found a ton of events that I wanted to participate in from the Community Event Listings. It was hard to pick just one, but I want to start small and focus on “Weekly Small Pleasures” hosted by A New Life Wandering. This even focuses on “…remembering and sharing those small things that made you happy during the week; things that made you smile, made you laugh, made you do a happy dance, made your heart silently smile, or they even made you cry for joy.” She posts hers up on Sunday, and I think I might do that too as Sunday is a good day to recap the week!

Thursday’s assignment: extend your brand with one of the following: a custom Blavatar, a custom image widget, or a Facebook fan page.

For now, I just decided to create a custom Blavatar, as I have a lot of things going on in my sidebar. I would love if my theme had a bottom side bar (maybe I should take advantage of WordPress’ Black Friday sale…). I want to create image widgets for my social media accounts in the future though!

Today’s (Friday’s) assignment: develop a regular feature for your blog.

I was doing well posting every other day or even daily throughout Blogging 101, but obviously dropped the ball this past week…anyways, for now my regular feature will be the Weekly Small Pleasures event as I’m still outlining my own content. Yes this blog is about creativity, and I have yet to do anything completely original, but these challenges and events are helping me build consistency and ideas so that when I do have my own content, I’ll have an arsenal of tools (and fellow bloggers) to help me.
